Open Office default saves files as ODT (Open Documents) which do not contain the clutter and personal information that DOCs do. No one should ever use DOC format unless you just don't care who has your personal information and that you want to help Microsoft keep people from using any other program but theirs.

That being said, you can choose to save the file in any one of many different extensions. You can also change your Open Office preferences to automatically assume one of these formats as your default. Microsoft Word will not open ODT, because they don't want people to use it.

The borders thing is something I would never use so I'll have to get back to you on that, but I'm sure that there is a way to do what you want. I'm just not familiar with it because I don't do any cute. =)

Thanks!
